Brownfields Program

What are Brownfields?

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Assessment and Clean-up and reinvestment of these properties protects the environment, reduces blight, and can remove development pressures.

EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant

Indiana 15 Regional Planning Commission was successful in obtaining a $500,000 grant from
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The most recent grant was awarded in
September of 2023. This 2023-2027 four-year grant is similar to the EPA grants awarded in
2008-2011, 2013-2016 and 2018-2021. With the Environmental Consultant selected, Phase I and
Phase II site assessments are conducted on perceived brownfields throughout the six-county
district. The end goal is that some of the studies will lead to cleanup projects if needed. Over 42
Phase 1 and 33 Phase II Assessments and 29 Remedial Action Plans have been accomplished
under the first three grants with more than $7M in Federal Funds and over $30M in private funds
towards clean-up and redevelopment. Please call the Commission for more information at 812-
367-8455 or visit EPA’s site at https://www.epa.gov/brownfields.
